United for Families: Fostering Community Stability Through Adult Education

For adults entering or reentering the workforce, strong literacy and effective communication skills are essential for career advancement, higher pay and economic stability. Mastering English as a second language is a significant barrier for many in our region—it’s more than just acquiring new vocabulary and grammar rules; it’s about empowering individuals to achieve their goals, unlocking opportunities for personal and professional growth and fostering a sense of community.

Together with partners like ProJeCt of Easton, Inc., we’re improving the lives of over 175,000 people in our region by building thriving families and increasing community stability. ProJeCt connects participants to vital resources and equips people with the skills and knowledge necessary to break the cycle of poverty, achieve their aspirations and promote positive change in their lives.

In the heart of our community, individuals like Malu and Ricardo are not just learning English, they’re overcoming barriers to realize their dreams.

Malu, graduate from ProJeCt of Easton's English as a Second Language and G.E.D. classes

Meet Malu—a determined learner from Brazil who, with the support of ProJeCt of Easton, found her voice and independence in a new country.

With all her friends and family back in Brazil, Malu felt socially isolated and completely dependent on her husband to communicate. Joining the English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at ProJeCt gave her the focus and motivation to learn English and gain valuable skills. As she progressed, her confidence grew, and she felt more comfortable speaking with others. The classes empowered Malu to volunteer in her community and build stronger relationships with teachers and other students. Through ProJeCt, Malu found a support system and a sense of belonging in her new country.

Ricardo, another adult learner from Ecuador, faced language barriers head-on to secure a better future for himself.

When Ricardo arrived in the U.S. three years ago, he knew very little English. He struggled to communicate at his new job and often sought help from his boss. Determined to improve, Ricardo enrolled in ESL classes at ProJeCt. With the support of dedicated teachers, he not only enhanced his English skills but also passed the G.E.D. test. Ricardo credits his teachers for helping him reach his current level of proficiency and advises others to “keep going” for a better future.

After graduation from ProJeCt where he and Malu were the graduation speakers, he plans to continue working on his English and pursue courses in business management, dedicating his achievements to his parents and sisters.
